I bought this expecting to get ideas on syllabus creation, exercise ideas, advice on how to address students, all to help me prepare my own creative writing program. I got some of that stuff but a majority of the book seemed to be focused on deconstructing and (for lack of a better word) negating everything I was taught in both undergrad and post grad programs. Everything I was taught is wrong and/or "ist." It was tough for me to focus on what exactly the book was saying with that hanging over my head. This book is an absolute gem that I've been recommending to everyone I can. Completely brilliant meditation on the lie of "pure craft," and how harmful and silencing it can be, with creative solutions that are making me rethink all my work, and process the what the current workshop model did to my writing and me as a trans writer. This book has my highest recommendation for every person interested in the art of creative writing.
